‘Digital Transformation’ is one of 2016’s hottest buzz-phrases, and that is exactly what Dell EMC World was all about.

From manufacturing, to retail, to healthcare, virtually every industry is changing as technology emerges to make things easier and more efficient. Dell EMC focused on showcasing the most innovative and exciting technology that is changing the way the world works and, as part of the Dell IoT Solutions Partner Program, we were very pleased to be a part of it.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is arguably the technology having the biggest impact on industry, and we were on the ground in Austin, Texas from 18-20 October to explain why businesses should be taking a strategic approach to its adoption. Whether you work within IT, energy, maintenance or anywhere in between, the question of ‘how will IoT impact my business’ should be at the forefront of your mind during implementation. The technology has the ability to significantly improve efficiencies and support key business goals, and so identifying them early on is vital.

Take, for example, the Cold Chain; A third of the world’s food goes to waste, and most of the losses come from spoilage on its way to being consumed. The average item of produce in the US travels 1,500 miles from its source, and much of the waste is due to lack of proper refrigeration during this journey.  Broadening and improving cold chain efficiency through an effective IoT solution can improve the quality, extend the shelf-life and increase the supply of perishable foods like meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy.

At the show we stood alongside other Dell Partners like Nokia, Bosch and IBM as part of the Dell EMC World Partner Showcase, with our demo focusing on unlocking and contextualising the data available in existing Cold Chain infrastructures through our proven IoT software solution. Looking at how IoT can be used in the production and delivery of ice cream – and with our demo already tipped by the Internet of Things Institute as a show highlight – we used this real world example to demonstrate the enabling features and benefits of edge based analytics and the Dell Edge Gateway series.

As our first event as a Dell Associate Partner, it was fantastic to see the range of IoT applications on show, and be part of the conversations that will carve out the future of the Technology.
